i went for EYU launching last thursday, and food for iftaar was provided. the EYU thingy ended at 6 20, so people lingered around to wait till 7. most muslims went for solatul asr, the non-muslims waited around to respect the fellow muslims.
it was about 7 15 when everybody was seated with food right in front of them. maghrib was 7 20, so we still had to wait a bit. my table was a table of 8 - nadira n i plus 5 indians and one chinese (all whom were non-muslims). then one of them said "um, can i just ask something to know ur opinion?"
me: sure. what is it about?
him: how do you feel when there's a lot of food in front of you and u fasted the whole day yet you still have to wait for 5 minutes? i'm here waiting for 5 minutes but it's like waiting for 5 years. of course we indians fast too, but we have a different kind of fast.
me: it's just in the mind. it's all psychology. if i dont fast and i dont eat, i would feel hungrier than if i fast. it's all in the mind la.
i cant recall what he actually replied, but i remember that he doesnt seem to be satisfied with my answer. so at the end, i just added "it's much easier than u think". then only he was like "oh, ok"
my personal opinion, abstaining from food and drinks are the easiest part of siyam. i really think it is. i mean, it's something tangible. it's either you put food or drinks in your mouth and swallow it, or you dont. thats it. full stop.
but there's so much more to siyam. the nafs of eating and drinking during sawm is very much easier to control than other nafs. which is harder for someone who eats every single day, and lies every single day: to NOT eat the whole day, or to NOT lie the whole day?
Abu Hurairah reported: the Prophet (s.a.w) said, "if one does not eschew lies and false conduct, Allah has no need that he should abstain from his food and his drink."
[riyad-us-saliheen: 1241]
that explains. plus, grabbing the "offers", ie the pahala berlipat ganda that Allah rewards specially in the month of ramadhan is waaay harder to reach than merely abstaining from food and drinks.
Ya Allah, give me strength, so that i can make this ramadhan a fruitful one. (my previous ramadhan is so bad that i dont want this ramadhan to be only better than the last. it must be the best)

huho. last time i dont really agree with those who take sahur only till imsak, coz there is a hadeeth that encourages sahur to be taken towards the end of it's timing. but very recently i came across a hadeeth [riyad-us-saliheen:1231] which shatters my disagreement.
eher. takde ilmu. tapi nak disagree pulak #_#
Allahumma innaka afuwwun karim, tuhibbul afwa fa'fuanna.
